The low investment cost together with the outstanding density range of the RM-3 makes negative scanning a viable alternative to film diapositives and opens the door further to a complete digital workflow.

Aerocon is constantly searching for a ways to improve our production and the quality of our products. Being that we are predominantly a softcopy operation and the increase in the demand for digital products a scanner has become a major step in our production process. Since the purchase of the Wehrli RM-3 film scanner in the fall of 2001 we have enjoyed a dramatic increase in the speed of scanning along with ease of operation and reliability. We are also impressed with quality of the resolution of the image. My technicians have compared the image to be the same as the quality as viewed on the optical analytical instruments. The RM-3 has had a tremendous impact on our operations.

... after about 9 months, running one+ shift per day, typically six days per week .. we scanned (8um) our Zeiss Jena grid plate, which contains 625 grid intersections whose nominal xy values are probably within 1um, based upon check measurements at the Jena factory. After computer-measuring the grid intersections, Bud performed a four-parameter (x-shift, y-shift, rotation and scale) of the measured locations to the nominal grid values. RMS residuals resulting from this calculation were 2.8um in x and 3.0um in y; not bad at all and very much in line with the advertised geometric accuracy. When performing a six-parameter (affine) fit, the RMS values were reduced to 1.6um in x and 2.0um in y, indicating a small amount of residual uncalibrated affinity in our scanner, but admittedly below the stated accuracy of the RM-3.
